Tummy pain

I'm 22 and female. I've been having really awful tummy pain recently to the point I struggle to move and keep groaning in pain. Liquid ibuprofen helps thankfully so I take that after meals but the rest of the time I feel awful.

I had a GP appointment last week and I couldn't tolerate when she examined my tummy so she got me to have a blood test and I looked on my patient access app to see that everything is normal but my Erythrocyte sedimentation rate is at 27 when the normal range is 1-12.

I sent an online message to my GP practice asking for test results and they said all my blood tests are normal and no further action is needed.

How long should I wait until calling about my tummy pain again if it stays? I've also noticed I've gained 11 pounds in the last 1/2 weeks (not really a problem since I used to be underweight) but I'm confused as I haven't done anything differently. I've noticed my left breast is bigger on the left side which I've gone to the GP about already and was told it's likely to be a fibroadenoma since it moves easily under the skin. I feel like it's grown since but not sure if I should call them again.

I feel like I contact my GP practice way too much because I'm in the process of a potential autism diagnosis and suffer from anxiety and depression. I've also been having chest pains for months. My ECG showed that the right side of my heart could be enlarged so I'm having further tests. Could this be linked to my slightly high ESR result?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid we can't say what might be the matter (diagnose) as we are not involved in your care. An ESR blood test above the normal range can be a sign of inflammation, but doctors call them non-specific as they don't show what is causing the inflammation. Quite a few medical conditions can cause an increase in ESR.

I think if your symptoms don't improve in the next couple of weeks you need to talk to your GP again and see what they say. It's often a process of elimination to find out the cause of someone's symptoms. I'm not sure if you are getting any support with managing your anxiety and depression. Do mention this to your GP  when you get the chance. The NHS website has some useful tips on managing your mental wellbeing here.

I know waiting when you are worried is stressful, but hopefully you'll know more soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
