Can a lump appearing as a cyst on an ultrasound be malignant

Hi. I found a small lump in right breast just above the nipple. Had the ultrasound which appeared as a cyst. Radiographer was ready to leave it at that when she said she saw inflammation. She decided on a FNA and nothing came out. She said it was solid. I then had to have biopsies. I'm currently await the results. My question is, even if a lesion appears well defined like a cyst on an ultrasound but is solid. Is it possible it could be malignant?
The waiting is actually making me feel unwell now and anxiety has crept in.

  • Hi Lofty and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you are having a worrying time at the moment.

An ultrasound can be used to look at lumps and see if they are solid or fluid filled.  A solid lump can be non-cancerous, such as a fibroadenoma.  These are very common, especially in young women, but can appear in women of any age.  It is possible that it could be cancerous, although this is less likely.  It is always advisable to get these lumps checked out so it is good you have had an ultrasound scan and biopsy.

It is so difficult waiting for results, especially when we are feeling anxious.  Some people find it helps to keep busy.  There is a website here that can help with those anxious thoughts that can keep us awake at night, which you might like to have a look at.

I hope you get your results soon.

I hope this is helpful but please do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
