First time Breast clinic appointment

I'd had some mild discomfort in inner arm at breast (thought it was from bra underwire as seems to be more when wearing bra), started paying more attention to breasts. Have always checked them and my last screening mammogram (in 2021) was clear.  I'm 55 and started HRT about 6 months ago.  Anyways, I felt the areola on one side had become more oval than round (can't really say for certain) and also if I flexed there is sometimes a long, vertical 'indent'.

Fast forward to seeing GP for reassurance and I've been sent to breast clinic on 2week path. Appointment is this week - I'm not sure what to expect.  Will they tell me that day if it's sinister?  I was going on my own - should I take my husband? Trying to be rational and think this is standard for anything to do with breast issues, but getting more anxious and checking it constantly!

Apologies for long post!

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I can understand finding changes in your breast can cause a lot of stress. Many women referred to the breast clinic are found not to have cancer but of course it is important that the doctors at the clinic are able to check this out just to be sure.

At the breast clinic you will see a breast specialist or specialist nurse who will examine you. You will have a mammogram and possibly an ultrasound. A needle biopsy is usually suggested if the scans show changes in the breast that the doctors are not sure about. This does not mean that anything is  particularly wrong but the biopsy will usually confirm what it is.

Some clinics have 'one stop clinics' where patients get their results on the same day.  I am not sure if the breast clinic you are going to provides this service, but the nurses there will tell you when to expect your results. Staff at the breast clinic are aware that women can be very anxious and I am sure they will do their best to put you at ease.

Some people do like to bring their partner or a friend for support.

The charity Breast Cancer Now have produced some information on what to expect at a breast clinic which you can see here.

I do hope this has been of some use. If you would like to go through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind Regards,

    Celene
