Breast tissue “different” on ultrasound

Had non lacticating mastitis 4 weeks ago. Treated with 2 loads of antibiotics. Cleared up by now itching and still having pain.
Seen doctor and got referred the consultant didn't seem to worried. During the ultrasound scan the no lump or mass was found but she asked when I stopped breast feeding. I've never been pregnant. No chance either. She then said my tissue looked different. I'm guessing looked like I'd been breast feeding? So waiting for biopsy results now.
anyone else had "different tissue". What could it be??

    welcome

I think they just make sure that you have had a full check to make sure all is clear as if they are u sure of anything the only way to 100 percent sign you off is to do a biopsy as a precaution .

hood luck for your biopsy results

    take care

  • Hi,

I'm in the same position. I had non-lactating mastitis too around 6 weeks ago. Had antibiotics and redness and pain cleared up , but I've got hardness on one side of the breast.

During the ultrasound, I was told I had tissue abnormality and microcalcifications. But no mass found.

Waiting for biopsy results too, hoping that it's just infection related.

Just wondering if you had hardness?

  • No hardness but 4 weeks on still painful to touch and very itchy!

I wasn't told I had calcification or any lumps just that the tissue was different. I didn't think at the time to ask what could be causing it. What could be causing my breast to look like I'm breast feeding.

I am also 36, no children. When are you expecting your results?

  • I'm not sure what a tissue abnormality could mean. Its quite frustrating when they throw things at you without explaining anything.

The radiologist told me the microcalcifications were concerning and there's tissue abnormality. I then went to meet the consultant and he said you don't drink/smoke or breastfeeding so he doubts its an infection.

I spoke with the nurse after on the phone to ask more questions and told me no mass/lump was found, no skin thickening or swelling. I'm trying to figure it all out but it's just a guessing game atm. With regards to biopsy she said if it comes back before the MDT meet( which is Wednesday morning) she'll call and book an appointment for this week. Otherwise I'll just have to wait until next week Weds/Thursday.

    What about you?

  • Same as you, I have never smoked.

I work away offshore and not back till the 22nd March so appointment booked provisionally for the 23rd but consultant said she would email me (no phone signal) if I need an appointment sooner.

it's been 1 week today since biopsy so not sure how quick the results come back. I wish I'd asked some questions before leaving but didn't think at the time. Was in shock needing the biopsy.

hope everything goes okay at your appointment. Please keep me updated.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing some unpleasant symptoms at the moment and appreciate you have some questions for other forum users. I'm pleased to see other people have already replied to you and hope this is of some use to you at this time.

There can be many reasons for tissue changes (meaning the appearance looking different to what would normally be seen within the breast). It doesn't automatically mean anything sinister is going on however often a biopsy is taken in this instance to rule out anything more serious.

I hope you know more soon and that everything works okay for you.

Do get back if needed or you are always welcome to call the helpline on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

  • Also, I recieved a letter today and it said extensive hyperechoic change. Some doctors refer that as a mass but I spoke to a cancer research nurse and she said it would just mean an area of abnormality which needs further investigating. It might not necessarily mean lump.

I feel like I've just got either conflicting information or the nurse at the hospital doesn't like to elaborate.

The letter still states that the Mammogram showed 90mm microcalcifications. I think that just means the area where the microcalcifications and the not the actual amount of microcalcification.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

Having tests and investigations done can be worrying especially if you are concerned that you could have cancer. It is good to read you have had a biopsy and this is the only way of telling for certain whether or not it is cancer

It is so hard not knowing, but the best thing to do now it to wait for the biopsy result .  No amount of trying to analyse what you have been told so far is going to say for certain what the results of the biopsy might be.
