Painful stomach 10 months after whipple procedure

Hi everyone,

my dad was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in Spain and declined extremely quickly to the point we almost lost him. We managed to fly him home and the surgeons decided they could operate and ended up doing a whipple as it had spread to pancreas, bowel also. He had a horrific recovery for almost 4 months he was vomiting every day and unable to walk. He since recovered quite well and got back to doing diy jobs walking a few miles each day until the last 3 weeks. He now has pain in his stomach at all times unless he's lying down doing nothing. He's back to eating only very small amounts also. He had no chemotherapy after the surgery as he was too poorly to withstand it so missed the 8 week window. Does anyone have any experience after a whipple or similar? My dad is adamant that he will have less than 5 years to live after a whipple but the surgeons haven't said anything of the sort. He didn't see a oncologist just upper GI nurses. Thank you in advance!

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry to hear you've all been through some very difficult times.

As your dad has had new symptoms in the last 3 weeks, 10 months after surgery, it would be good for him to get checked out by his doctor.  He could also call the upper GI nurses if he has their number and explain how he's feeling. Best for him to be reviewed by a health professional to get their opinion on the changes.

I have placed here some information from our website about living with cholangiocarcinoma which may be useful.

Others may come forward with their own experiences of cholangiocarcinoma or life after a Whipples operation, but their experiences will be individual to them.

Take care, and if you or your dad to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
