Worried about cervical cancer

Hi, I was hoping people could offer any advice..... feeling sick with worry. I had a baby 12 weeks ago via c-section (this was my 3rd baby) During the pregnancy, I noticed slight brown tinged stains on my underwear. Midwives didn't seem concerned. I bled for 6 weeks after the birth and have had a period since (all seemed ok albeit a little heavier than before). I've noticed the slight brown tinged stain again on my underwear, I only notice it on my pinky/peachy coloured underwear and in my black or grey ones, it looks whiteish. I've googled this (I know I shouldn't but we are all guilty of this) and said it could be cervical cancer. I don't appear to have any other symptoms. I've just booked my smear test but it's not for another 3 weeks. I've not had one in so long and yes I am ashamed of that and will not miss any in future. Can anyone offer any advice please? I'm out of my mind with worry. I keep looking at my baby and getting upset as scared I won't see him grow up

I hope someone can reply and offer any advice x

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Bleeding after a cesarean is to be expected so try not to concern yourself too much.

This is normal bleeding where the placenta was attached to the uterus. The brown blood is just old blood. It can take a while for your periods to settle back to normal after your baby so try not to think the worst. It is good to hear that your midwife is not concerned.

The internet is so very general and it will not take in to account the recent birth of your baby.

It is good to hear that you are going for a smear. it is not a test for cancer, it is a test to prevent cancer. Have a read about cervical screening written by the NHS here

I do hope that this has helped reassure you.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply.

I went to GP yesterday who looked at my cervix and said it looked a little red and a fair bit of discharge. I had some light pink discharge just before my appointment. She took a swab and asked a nurse if she could do my smear whilst I was there aswell, so had it done there and then. Should I be worried about what she found? I'm so scared.

  • Hi Worriedmama3 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear you're still feeling so worried about this.

As Catherine, my colleague, said your body will go through many changes after having a baby, you may experience bleeding and discharge for some time afterwards, and there are many things that could cause your cervix to appear a little red.

It is good to hear that you have now had your smear test done and the doctor took a swab, which would show if there is anything causing your cervix to be red. Your doctor's surgery will get in touch with you about these results, which can sometimes take around a week.

You should get your smear results in a letter in a few weeks.  This will tell you whether you need to go for another appointment or if you can go back for a routine smear test in 3 years time.

In the meantime try not to worry too much.  Some people find it helpful to keep busy while they are waiting for test results. This website may be helpful with helping to manage those anxious while you're waiting.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel

  • Thank you for your reply.

Is redness of cervix a symptom? Also, should I be concerned that she rushed the smear through the same day? Literally out of my mind :( x

  • Hello worriedmama3,

Inflammation of the cervix can make it look red, but inflammation can occur for a number of reasons, infection is the commonest and can also cause a discharge too. I don't think on its own the redness is a feature that can predict what is the matter.

If the smear was rushed through, it may just have had something to do with you taking priority because you haven't had one for a while. But I think if the GP was really concerned they would have made a referral to the hospital on the spot rather than waiting for the smear results.

I can appreciate you worrying more about this because you are a mother, I think this is a common reaction amongst mums when they have a health problem, but most of the time with things like this nothing serious is going on.

Health scares like this happen from time to time and are usually unsettling and scary until you get sorted out, try and hold your nerve and do what works for you to stay calm while you are waiting for this to happen.

Do give us a ring if you want to talk anything over, the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
