Bone Marrow donation

My Mum has lymphoma and is on a watch and wait. We were wondering about bone marrow donation, do you have to wait until you are told you need a bone marrow transplant or could you elect to donate  bone marrow to a relative in order to help relieve their symptoms.

  • Hello Starmern and thanks for posting,

If the doctors are considering treating anyone with a bone marrow or stem cell transplant (the main difference is whether donated blood cells are collected from the bloodstream or bone marrow) they would instigate the search for a suitable donor which would usually include testing some family members. I believe the best chances of a full match are with a sibling. But not everyone is suitable for this sort of treatment and I don't know it is might ever be an option for your mum.

Members of the public can volunteer to be a donor.  This involves getting tested,  a donation would only be required if they matched up with someone. But I don't think this is what you meant.

Transplants are quite a sophisticated type of treatment. You can read more about them on our website at this link.
