Suspected bladder cancer

I am very frightened.  Went to the GP with a lot of bleed and some clots.  Sample was reported as no infection.  I see a consultant on March 2 at a one stop clinic.  I am scared witless and already planning funeral.

  • Hi Puttypoo and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear you are having such a worrying time and can understand you wanting to find out more about the causes of the blood in your urine.

Blood in urine can be caused by lots of different conditions, not all of them are as serious as cancer, but it is always important to get checked out if you notice this, as you did.  As well as urine infections and cancer, bladder or kidney stones, inflammation and blood disorders can cause you to see blood when you wee.

A urologist will be able to carry out further investigations and figure out what has been causing you to have blood in your urine so it is positive that you have been referred to one by your GP.

We all worry when we are waiting for tests and investigations, and our minds can think all kinds of things.  There is a website called Every Mind Matters which can help with managing the anxious thoughts which can keep us awake at night.  It may be helpful to have a look at the information and ideas there.

I hope this is helpful but do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might likel to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel

  • Thank you.  It's a one stop clinic so hopefully I will get a diagnosis on the day.  It's definitely not an infection.  It's the large clots that are so worrying.
