Another worry

Hi

I have had pain up bottom dor over a year, was sent for xray found arthritis in hip, had appointment with physio.

Visited and spoke to Gp several times, no urgency from them.

2 weeks ago finally had examination, couldn't feel anything, however, Fit test done and they have found a small amount of blood in poo.

They sent a message to say make routine appointment to discuss management and there isn't enough blood to send me to hospital as urgent.

Any blood in stool surely should be a concern?

Has anyone been in same position

  • 'Any' blood in stool isn't really a concern if it's a one-off or very occasional thing. Straining, stomach bugs etc can occasionally result in blood.

keep a close eye on your stool, if it is regularly very dark (black) or visible signs of blood, you should press your gp on it.

  • Hi

Thanks for reply, I hadn't actually seen it, doctors had sent for me to do  the Fit sample test. I will definitely be keeping an eye out. Thanks for your help!

  • Hello Suzyq10 and thanks for posting,

When arranged by a GP to investigate someone's symptoms, a normal diagnostic FIT (faecal immunohistochemical test) result isn't zero, it is any number under 10, so a small amount of blood can be picked up without undue cause for concern. However test results always need to be interpreted in context so your GP would also take the whole picture into account as well.

The idea of FITs is to look for hidden bleeding that isn't visible to the naked eye that you wouldn't otherwise know about. Both hidden and visible bleeding can occur for a number of reasons,  commonly haemorrhoids (piles) and anal tears. In general it is a good idea to report any unexplained bleeding to your GP so they can assess it and decide if it needs to be looked into, but it can occur for number of reasons and might not be related to cancer.
