Last 2 smears showing hpv and abnormal cells

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this.  I had a smear 4 years ago which came back abnormal but but didn't require any treatment but told to have my next smear in 3 years which I actually had last January. It came back showing I had HPV and abnormal cells so was sent for a colposcopy.

I went for the appointment feeling worried but was assured it was nothing to worry about.  However they couldn't perform it as my cervix had closed so had to go in for day surgery to have it opened and have my colposcopy and they fitted me with a mirena coil at the same time as I was having very irregular bleeding.

Whilst having my minor surgery I had to have loop excision as they found an abrasion.  I was then told to have another smear in 12 months time.

I had my smear this January and had a letter 2 weeks later saying again I have HPV with low grade dyskaryosis so I have to go for another colposcopy next Thursday.

I just don't understand if I've had treatment last year why I still have HPV and abnormalities and I'm concerned if my cervix has closed again, can this happen? Especially if I have a coil fitted.

I think I'm just a bit worried as even with my coil, which was great until December, I was having no bleeding.  But mainly through December until now I've been losing red/brown blood/discharge which is really annoying. Could this be as I'm going through the perimenopause? Or is this so related to my HPV and abnormal cells?

I'm really hoping someone has been through similar that can advise x

  • Hello and thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate your concerns.

HPV is a virus that can sometimes take some time to go away , in many cases it can take 1-2 years or longer to leave the body or another type of HPV can be picked up between screening.

I am not sure if the cervix can close again, from what I have read about this is that it can happen every month temporally as part of the menstrual cycle but for some women they may naturally have a closed or narrow cervix.

Having HPV with abnormal cervical cells (low grade dyskaryosis) does not cause symptoms. The discharge you have could be caused by your hormone levels.

You have a colposcopy appointment coming up soon so you will have an opportunity to ask the team there about all of this. Please be reassured that by taking part in the cervical screening programme you are lowering your risk of ever getting cervical cancer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
