Adjuvant Chemotherapy following Oncotype DX score for Breast

I have had a small DCIS with 7mm of invasive (grade 3) cancer removed and lymphs tested (clear), right breast Er positive and HER2 neg. Am now on Letrozole for 7.5 years ( I am 52) Due to do a weeks radiotherapy next week and that was supposed to be the end of the current treatment plan. Oncologist called to say the Oncotype test came back with a high reoccurrence score and I now have to do Chemo, starting three weeks post radiotherapy. Wasnt expecting this and a bit shocked so forgot to ask her questions!, but now i have loads of questions and cannot get an appointment with the Oncologist until after radiotherapy all done. For this type of Adjuvant Chemo does anyone know or have experience of how many cycles is usally recommended and over how long?

I had BC and had Oncotype with low score I would ask your score check that you are happy first what is a high score and low score is how you see it , I was told that at my age 48 it needed to be over 25 mine came in very much lower than this .

it's usually standard of 6 sessions every 3 weeks it's about 5 months

  • thank you! I cant ask the question on the score as I cant get to speak to the Oncologist (frustrating!)

I would deffo think about chemo as if the score is just over is it worth going through all that has your oncologist got a sec you can speak to they should give you the score for you to at least think about it and discuss it they can't surely leave you in limbo for weeks not knowing your score bless you ️

I would also ask the percentage of how chemo will benefit you too as chemo is a long hard road , great if it's going to substantially benefit to you .

  • these are all some of the Q's i have rolling around in my head, driving me mad not being able to speak to anyone!

if you call your oncologist sec and explain that you are upset and can't settle and need some answers asap either a call appointment or if they could get the info and call you honestly they will do their very best to help you they really won't let you go out of your mind with worry I used to call mine regularly and they always called back as I told them my anxiety was through the roof .

honestly they will assist you but you have to be persistent in calling them it's not fair to you to wait a few weeks lovely ️

  • i did do that Monday, but will try again - thanks :)

  • Good luck

let us no how you get on I wish you tons of luck

    best wishes love Lara ️

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate you have some questions. Generally speaking you will have 2 or 3 different types of chemotherapy, some may given weekly and some monthly but overall it is given over a period of about 6 months. Now, this is quite a broad answer to your question so you will need to ask the team caring for you for more information. You will get a chance to ask this, and you will be given information about the type of chemotherapy you will get, and that will include how it is given and the side effects that could happen.

We have information about the different types of chemotherapy used for breast cancer and there is a useful video of a nurse explaining how it is given and about some of the side effects, you can see all of this here on our website

Once you know what treatment you will be having and the plan to give it I hope it will seem a little less daunting.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
