Painful vein after 1st chemo?

I had my first ABVD chemotherapy treatment last Friday, the nurses had to slow down near on stop the last drug that I had as the pain into my arm was excruciating! It felt like my arm was going to explode. Now 4 days on the vein feels tender and will randomly hurt and just feels very right in my arm? Any advice or experience? Thank you x

  • Hi Lolvmart and thanks for posting,

This sounds like an unpleasant experience to have and I can understand you want some advice.

This combination of drugs can sometimes cause irritation at the site of the cannula (the thin tube that goes into your arm) and along the vein the drugs go in to, making it feel painful and tight.  Sometimes you have a cold pack or heat pack applied when this happens, depending on the drug which may have caused it.

From what you described it sounds like you had this drug through a cannula.  Some people will have a PICC or central line, which is a line that stays in place while you have your treatment.  You can read more about these here.

If it is still causing pain, it would be good to speak to the unit where you have treatment to see if they think applying a cold or heat pack now would help, and also taking something for the pain if you have not already.

When this has happened you will not have the treatment in this arm through a cannula until it feels completely better.

    I hope this is helpful.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
