2 week referral

I went to the GP last week as I have had a few changes in my right breast. She was referring me to the breast clinic but hasn't done it yet. Will I have to wait a further week for this appointment?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry but I am not sure how long you will have to wait, that will depend on the type of referral the GP has done and the waiting times to be seen by the breast clinic team. As you most probably know the NHS is under a lot of pressure and some people are waiting longer for their appointments across the whole of the NHS.

If your GP has done an urgent suspected breast cancer referral then you should be seen by 2 weeks, however, as I have said this might take a bit longer.

If you know what hospital you have been referred to, you could ring the breast clinic there to find out if they have got the referral and if they can tell you when you will be seen. Otherwise you could go back to your GP if after a couple of weeks you don't hear about your appointment and let them know.

Waiting is always difficult so I hope you have support. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
