Waiting to see hermatoligst

Had routine blood test other day for bloated stomach dr told phoned me with results said I have low grade lymphoma  because of my white blood cells being in there twenty s and liver showing abnormalities and making me urgent appointment

  • That's a rather bold statement for a gp to make after only 1 "routine" blood test. You sure s/he never said "suspected"? Routine blood tests can indicate an issue, can point in a certain direction towards there being an issue or certain issue, but they're not diagnostic. No scan, no nothing. I'd be calling him or her back and getting to know why they are certain it's lymphoma based on one set of blood panels.

Even when i had high red blood cell counts, i needed further tests. Like proper tests to diagnose what the issue was.

  • He rang up said straight away you have got leukaemia bloods came back saying low grade lymphoma said bloods were 11 in October but are now 27 so positive it's cancer was bolt out blue

  • I'm not saying that you are wrong. But you either picked him up incorrectly or he did an awful job explaining things.

I highly doubt they can diagnose such things on normal blood panels. I mean, those are two completely different cancers you have mentioned for starters. With those types of cancers they're usually done with either bone marrow biopsies, with scans or biopsies of the lymph nodes or if you happen to have a tumour.

I think what you're needing to do is ask for a proper gp appointment. An appointment where they can explain everything clearly face to face. If they still stick to the "it's this you have", ask how they came to that conclusion without any sort of biopsy or scans.

Did they at any point take a sample from a lymph node? Do you even have an obvious swollen node?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Doctors can tell a lot from a blood test but in order to find out more about any condition that you have you will have to go through various tests which I am sure will be arranged by your haematologist when you see them.

I can't say how the GP went about diagnosing you with non -Hodgkins lymphoma but they will have taken into account any symptoms you are experiencing and your recent full blood count. There are many different types of lymphoma and a more detailed set of tests will probably be needed to find out more.

We have some information about diagnosing NHL which you can see here

I do hope that you hear about your appointment soon. In the meantime do give us a ring if you would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline. We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Eloop ,

Thought I would explain my journey so far with my Haemotologist appointments . My first was a chat about my health , symptoms, FBC , examination.

I had a chest X-ray on the back of this appointment and regular blood tests to check my high platelet level .

Also a ultrasound and a bone marrow biopsy to try and find a cause .

My biopsy results have picked up abnormalities in the bone marrow but waiting on further testing and a second opinion which will take some weeks .
The consultant has some idea perhaps ( blood disorder ET but cannot say 100% until all of the findings comeback.

So my whole process has been since September so not just a quick process more of eliminating.

I do hope you get the much needed help and advice regarding your ongoing health issues.

Here to chat if you need .
