Melanoma

Hi I had a mole removed 21st December 2022 it's now been 8 weeks and no results i was told before the mole was removed it was malignant melanoma is it normal to wait so long for results. I phoned the secretary she said it was a 10/12 week wait for results,  I said so no news is good news she said what I can tell you your marked as urgent and will get a letter or phone call with a appointment. Is that good or bad. Appreciate any feed back thanks

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are needing to wait a long time for your biopsy result. Unfortunately there are some back logs at the moment in the NHS so most people are waiting longer than usual to hear something.

Waiting can be so unsettling but hopefully you will know more soon about what needs to happen next.

Once the results are in, as the secretary has said, an appointment will be arranged to discuss them with the consultant. They will explain the findings and the plan moving forward.

The biopsy can confirm if it is melanoma and if further treatment is needed. Sometimes surgery known as a wide local excision is necessary to remove more tissue and check the lymph nodes but if the melanoma is removed at an early stage this may not be needed.

    There is more information here.

Do get back if needed and try and keep yourself busy if you can.

I hope everything is okay for you

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi thank you for the reply I phoned the secretary again today and she said my results are back and the consultant will phone or write to me next week with a appointment. Does the fact that I've waited so long and still have to wait mean its not to serious. Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

I am afraid I can't read in to the fact that it has taken so long to get an appointment.

We have heard from other patients that they have had delays particularly in dermatology due to shortage in pathology and an increased demand in patients waiting to see dermatologists.

Try not to think the worst until you know more.

If at any stage you would like to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
