Seroma Swelling and Nerve Pain

Hi, not sure if breast nurses can help answer this please or anyone can advise if have had the same experience.

On Tuesday (14th Feb) I will be 3 weeks post surgery (lumpectomy and auxiliary node clearance).

Ive had consistent "burning" and tight sensation in my upper arm/armpit area (same side as breast surgery) and 2 drains of 250ml and 300ml of fluid. The seroma is as big again today and will likely need another drain when clinic re opens Tuesday. Im still on Tramadol for the pain and increased dose of amitriptyline (now 60mg in the eve), along with 20mg of Zomorph twice daily for my hip pain. Im also taking ibuprofen as an anti-imflamitory during the day. Nothing is touching this arm/under arm pain and swelling around the node clearance wound. A stitch has now pushed through the wound under my arm and im concerned the stinging feeling may be an infection internally (nothing is leaking from the wound). I mentioned this to my GP last week but he just in creased the amitriptyline and didn't really know what to do! Im due back work Tuesday but i don't feel alert enough (with meds) or comfortable with this swelling, to sit working on a lap top for 7 hours a day.

Don't know who to speak to anymore as Dr dosent seem to know and I can never get through to the breast care team.

Can anyone suggest what else I can do to alleviate this swelling and pain in arm x

  • Hello

It sounds like you are having a really difficult time.  I am sorry to hear that you have been unable to get through to your breast care team.  It think they need to assess the situation for you.  As your GP doesn't seem to know what else to do I wonder if they could get in touch directly with the breast team on your behalf.  I wasn't sure whether the clinic appointment you have for Tuesday is with the breast team or the GP.  Either way if might be useful to ask them to refer you to a specialist pain clinic to see if they can help with pain relief.  It sounds like you may not really be well enough to return to work just yet, so if you are able to it might be a good idea to consider taking more time off work.  If you can arrange to have talk with you HR department, it might also be possible for you to have a phased return to work with shorter working days or working weeks initially.

I am sorry that I cannot come up with any solutions for you, but this is because it sounds like you need to be reassessed by the breast team.

I hope things get sorted out soon for you.

  • Thank you so much for your reply.

I have managed to get through to the care team and have extended sick leave for another 2 weeks. Work have been supportive through this. Ive actually given in today to taking an afternoon (3hrs!)  Which is a long nap having slept 12 hrs at night!

I'm booked for a further drain tomorrow (Tuesday) so I will ask if I can speak to anyone about the pain, but today its been more localised around the underarm area and chest.

Thank you for taking the time to reply xx

    thats so strange

    never mind

I had the same as you back in July I had a terrible sting for 6 to 8 weeks or more maybe longer  underarm where they took the lymph nodes 29 in total it seemed like it went on longer

I also had a Seroma that was there more than 12 weeks but my consultant wouldn't drain as some do and some don't agree as it fills back up they told me to let nature donors course and it will settle on it's own and it sure did .

I would not rush back to work take your time .

    Love Lara ️

  • Aww bless you. Its "sore" and feels tight around my arm all the time. I couldnt cope without it being drained so im glad they have drained it..

I'm usually "ready" to go back work after illness but I know i'm just not ready to mentally cope as well as physically cope at the moment.

Just want to get back to normal life and put all this behind me xxx

I worked from home so it was ok but I completely understand I finished radiotherapy in nov then had the tiredness to follow I was worn out after that I am now feeling I got my full energy back like a bottle of fizzy pop but the tightness is still there with me don't think it ever goes away but the stinging did go thankfully my underarm some days is so so tight any bra or anything slightly tight kills me im nlt sure if that area will ever be the same for me x love Lara ️
