Facing colonoscopy under deep sedation

I am facing a colonoscopy, after a failed colonoscopy, under deep sedation.

I am not worried about the procedure

I am terrified of any anaesthetic. I have a sensitivity to all opiates. My respirations are effected, as in slow down usually to around 10/ 12 per minute.

any reassurance would be welcome

  • Hi barking,

I had a colonoscopy under 2 years ago. I opted for sedation and gas & air. All they do is put a cannula into the back of your hand. You do feel a little scratch, but that's it. It's over in seconds. Once I was in the room where they do the colonoscopy they gave me the sedation through the cannula. It took seconds for it to work. I was also offered gas & air which I took so i was very dosed up. I remember very little about the procedure. I really hope this puts your mind at rest. If you are offered gas & air as well take it. Hope everything goes well for you. Take care.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you need to have a colonoscopy and I can appreciate that this could be a difficult time for you.

Before you have the procedure you will have chance to discuss the procedure and your concerns. Deep sedation , from what I understand, is given by an anaesthetist, so you will be able to tell him or her about any allergies or sensitivities you have. During the procedure this anaesthetist will stay with you and make sure you are are ok. Remember that the hospital will be used to doing this and would not have offered it if it could not be carried out safely.

I can see that someone has come along to talk about their experience so this will be a help too.

You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
