Post menopause bleeding help

I was diagnosed with endometrial thickening after some bleeding prompted investigation. The biopsy was inconclusive as the sample was insufficient. I had a Merida iud inserted and oestrogen gel for menopause symptoms. I'm 57. I've had spotting for around 2 months but heavier bleeding for last 10 days which started after sex. My GP says there's nothing to worry about - but I'm worried. Any thoughts?

  • Hi Nelly, was the biopsy not repeated? I would have thought that any post menopausal bleeding should be investigated. Hopefully one of the CR nurses will reply tomorrow and give you some advice.

    Take care x

  • Hi

I'm having post menopausal bleeding too.

I had a transvaginal scan 3 weeks and now this week I have to have a colposcopy.  To look at the cervix.

The bleeding is on and off

I've got to be put out to have the mirena removed.

    X

I'm scared of what might be wrong

  • Hey Amy thank you for responding. No repeat biopsy - during the first one I went into cervical shock when registrar hit nerve. It’s just been one thing on top of another - yes I should wait to hear from nurses - but I hope they’re on strike!!
  • Hi - it's a horrible shadow following you around isn't it. I hope you get it all sorted and your mind cleared. Good luck to you .

  • Good morning

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear about the symptoms you are having and appreciate the worry they are causing you. Unfortunately no one here can say what the matter may be for you.

It is good to hear you have spoken with your GP and they aren't concerned but I understand that this is still playing on your mind.

I assume your doctor is presuming the spotting/bleeding is a side effect of your mirena which is very common ocurrence for several months after the fitting of the IUD. However if it continues or worstens I suggest you go back and see the GP.

    Best wishes

  • Hello there and thanks for commenting on this thread.

It is worrying undergoing tests and not knowing what is causing symptoms. Unfortunately no one here can say what is the matter i'm afraid but hopefully you'll find out more soon once you are seen in colposcopy and heard the thoughts of the doctor.

Bleeding can be caused by many different things as seen here and most of them won't be the result of a cancer. At colposcopy they can take a closer look at the cervix and take a biopsy if needed of any abnormal areas, or arrange further tests as needed to find out more.

Thickening of the womb lining is often the cause of post menopausal bleeding but I see you already have the mirena coil. I don't know how long you have had this in place as this often does cause spotting and bleeding for many months after it is put in.

Try not to over think things too much until you have seen the doctor and find out what needs to happen next.

Do get back if needed and feel free to call us on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Naomi.

Thankyou so much for messaging me.

I have had the mirena for 6 years.

  • Hello Fallmare,

With a Mirena coil, erratic bleeding can occur usually in first few months after it is fitted, I am not sure if this might have anything to with your 'on and off' bleeding. But the key thing is that your doctor has arranged tests to check you out to be sure what is going on.

Try to keep an open mind and remember that very often nothing serious is found.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
