Core biopsy

2 weeks ago I had a biopsy and they put a tatainiun clip in. Went for results and it is cancer. Had a phone call today saying I have to go to the breast centre on Monday to have another tatainiun clip put in which will be a little bit bigger, before surgery.

Thanks

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I hope the following information about titanium clips will help you understand why you have them.

A tiny metal (titanium) marker or clip is placed where the biopsy was taken. The clip shows up in mammograms and marks the area where the biopsy was taken. This helps the surgeon find the exact area again if you need to have more breast tissue removed later on.

The clip is very small and will not cause you any harm or discomfort, even if it is not removed although it is usually removed during surgery.

On Monday when you go back to the breast clinic you will know more information about your situation and what will happen next.  In the meantime you may want to read our information about how breast cancer is treated, you can see it here

You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
