HPV disappeared after 16 years?

Hey all, so I'm happy but a little confused - in 2021 I had a smear test with the result of HPV positive and abnormal cells. This was my first smear since testing for HPV.  I had a coloscopy and all was fine, they said just to have annual checks.

I've been with my husband for 16 years so I know I contracted from him. I know they say most people clear HPV in 2 or so years so I figured if I'd had it all this time, I'd have it forever.

I went for my next smear earlier this month (Jan 2023) and just received my results which say I'm now HPV NEGATIVE and don't need another smear for 3 years - back to normal!

My question is - is it possible I cleared the virus after 15 years?! Or I only contracted it around that time and my body has since cleared it (in the 2 or so years it says it does) - which would mean I would need a serious conversation with my husband!

Any advice or knowledge would be appreciated!

  • Hello Vc88 and thanks for posting,

Although many women who test positive for HPV understandably ponder it, how and when anyone picks up the virus is always a mystery.

I don't think every aspect about the natural history of HPV acquisition and clearance is completely understood yet and most studies probably don't follow participants up beyond 5-10 years. But a newly detected HPV infection can be the result of an old one acquired in the past that has become reactivated recently.

Although I don't think this is all that common, I have read about intermittent positivity meaning that someone might test positive and then negative and then positive again. In essence, it could be possible to have an HPV infection for a long time, not necessarily in an active state throughout, and test negative after having tested positive previously.

HPV testing as the main test in cervical screening is relatively recent, in future as more data accumulates regarding women's HPV status over the years, hopefully more information will come to light, but I think for now some questions about it are unanswerable.
