Fit test result

My sister has justed had a stool fit test the results come back and they said it was adnormal and the results was 48 does that mean she has colon  cancer she is so worried the hospital now wants to see her. But she wants to know does 48 mean high to have cancer as noone will tell us the range when it is high or low please help.

  • Hello and thank you for your enquiry.

When a FIT test result is any level above 10 it is said to be positive. But I think FITs that are very positive (above 100 or higher) confer the highest priority in terms of getting a colonoscopy to find out what is causing the bleeding/symptoms. So tests at this level are more of a concern although even then, most people with a test in this range won't turn out to have cancer.  This is because there are a number of others causes of bleeding from the bowel. So it isn't possible to be very sure of things based on a FIT level, and important to keep an open mind, until the colonoscopy has been done.

I appreciate that waiting to find out more is unsettling and I hope your sister has her colonoscopy soon to find out what is going on.
