Multiple myeloma and radiotherapy

Hi my mum is 56 and has multiple myeloma she's very weak the first lot of chemo hasn't worked and she's just had 2 rounds of radiotherapy to hit 2 spots which if not treated could lead to her being paralysed. I'm just wondering how radiotherapy can make you feel as she has rapidly declined since and is so tired she can't even take her own tablets we are forced to open her mouth and put them in, is this normal? She's so confused to. Thankyou.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum and can understand what a hard time this must be for you all.

It is difficult for us to give you an idea as to what could be causing her 'rapid decline'. It maybe a combination of different factors including the cancer and her treatment or it maybe that she might be anaemic due to the multiple myeloma. There is a list of some of the symptoms that patients can experience which you can see  here

It would be good to get the input from the oncologist caring for her or if she has a palliative care nurse then you could ask them. It is really only an assessment by her doctors who can really find out what may be causing her symptoms and what she could perhaps take to make her feel less tired.

This may include a blood transfusion. If she is having medication for any pain than this can also have an affect on how tired she may be feeling. Sometimes these drugs need to be reviewed. Radiotherapy can make  someone feel tired but it may not be the soul reason for her extreme tiredness

The confusion may be a result of a raised calcium level but of course I can't be sure. We have some information about treating some of the symptoms which you might find helpful to look at here

There maybe support that she could get at home that can be organised through the GP so it would be good to encourage her to speak to them to see what support you copuld both get. Have a look here

I hope that some of these links may be helpful. Do get your mum's permission to talk to her health professionals if that is what she wants.

Sometimes it can help to keep a diary recording how she is feeling throughout the day recording any pain or other symptoms that she is experiencing.

I do hope that you are also being supported through friends and family as it is important to take breaks.

If either of you would like to ring one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to do so. We are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 8004040

    All the best,

    Catherine
