Waiting anxiously for Colonoscopy

I've been put through fast track colonoscopy because I done a couple of FIT tests ,one came back positive and other negative, Doctor gave me a couple of FIT tests to do because I have been complaining about blood during bowel movements. I've had Piles in the past and I even had surgery for these, but the bleeding never lasted as long and that's why I went to the doctors. He put me through colonoscopy just to make sure the bleeding was not coming from somewhere else. ( I do have an internal pile at the moment)
I spoke to the colonoscopy nurse the next day I was referred , who was lovely and asked me a lot of questions.  I had no other syntoms to complain beside bleeding , constipation and itching.  been on Laxido for almost two months that has improved massively my constipation and improved my rectal bleeding a lot! It looks like it's gone now.
the nurse said she needed some blood tests , it's been a week since I done the blood tests and almost two weeks since she phoned me. And I still haven't heard anything from them. I was told not to worry as all syntoms I have match with hemorroids and I might need some banding. In fact when she phoned me I was also waiting for a referral to have a wisdom tooth removed who was causing me a lot of problems and she told me to give priority to that- that's sorted now!

my stress levels are through the rough, been told not worry but I just need to get this done, I am panicking it could be something else.

Is it normal waiting this long? I thought fast track was 2 week wait till you have your colonoscopy.

thank you

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

The two week wait is a guide to being seen or assessed, but is not necessarily possible at the moment with the strain on the health service. I expect they have to prioritise the waiting list for these procedures and as you have been spoken to by the nurse, so reviewed,  and your bloods have been taken they will work out when best to see you.

It is good to hear that your rectal bleeding has nearly all gone, but a positive FIT test does always trigger a colonoscopy referral. The blood in your poo can mean a number of things including piles and constipation which you have, so it isn't just a cancer diagnosing test. But it is important your GP feels your symptoms have been investigated even if they have now improved.

I know it's difficult, but if you can try and not focus on this too much and keep yourself off the internet, sometimes it can cause more anxiety and keeps cancer at the front of your mind. They will get in touch with you when an appointment has been arranged.

Take care, and I hope you hear news soon.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply.

everyone around me seems less worried than me. There is always that possibility that is something else. And my mind goes through all possible scenarios.
Don't ever remember having hemorroids bleeding for so long. And this things have been plaguing me since my 20's and had surgery in 2019.
I just want to get this done, and know that exactly what is wrong .  I have already stocked on clear chicken broth (just the juice) . The waiting is killing me, and overthinking is doing me no good, still havent had any news about my blood tests.

    Thank you again
