Bladder cancer after BCG

I am scheduled for BCG doses 25, 26 and 27 soon.  What is likely to happen after this treatment

  • Hello JackW and thanks for posting,

I can understand you asking, but I'm afraid I am not sure exactly what will happen next.

When BCG is given as what is called a maintenance treatment, the schedules can vary depending on the risk of the bladder cancer coming back. Sometimes it is given for 3 years, I don't think it is usually given for longer than that.

It may be that after your 27th treatment you will have had 3 years in which case your course of treatment would be completed.

After completing treatment the next step is to be monitored for a while in case the cancer comes back.  This would involve a check up cystoscopy possibly 3 months later and if all is well on a regular basis for a while afterwards.  Our website explains how people with non muscle invasive bladder cancer might be followed up at this link.   I think the frequency and duration of check ups may vary depending on the circumstances so do ask your specialist team what they are likely to recommend.

Please give us a call if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays from 9am till 5pm.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
