peg feeding

Hello, a friend had head/neck tumour removed in 2021 with reconstruction to tongue/palete. This followed tonsil cancer in 2014 which was treated with chemo and rx successully at that time but obviously recurred.. He is now on a permanent PEG since surgery. Is life expectancy shortened due to the peg? A diffiult one to answer I expect, he is 60 yrs old. Thanks

  • Hi Flossie65 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

A PEG feeding tube is normally inserted when a person is unable to eat or drink enough or has problems swallowing.  They are a safe, long term way of getting nutrition, hydration and medicines.

Life expectancy after the insertion of a PEG feeding tube is normally affected by any underlying conditions the person may have, rather than the feeding tube itself. So it would depend on your friend's health.  There is some more information here about PEG feeding tubes.

I hope this is helpful, but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
