Lump(s) within vaginal wall - 2WW

Hi, after sifting through discussions on here for days I've decided to reach out in the hope someone can just give me some insight on what to exvpect at my appointment tomorrow.

I have been referred under 2WW to gynaecology for some lumps that have grown within my vagina. They are in quite deep, under the skin on the left hand side. One is on the lower part of the vaginal wall and one on the left hand side. They are solid and pea sized. No pain.

I had an ultrasound appt today but the sonography team said they cannot actually scan the vaginal wall so I will have to wait until I see the gynaecology consultant tomorrow.

my question is really - what should I expect from this appointment? What is likely to happen during it? I am really apprehensive now that I know they haven't even got a scan to go by. I have PTSD after suffering vaginal trauma years ago so this situation makes me feel very nervous and vulnerable anyway.

If anyone else has experienced these sort of lumps and has anything to add I'd also be appreciative.

thank you & sorry for the blabbering xx

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing some tests at the moment and are due to see the gynaecologist tomorrow. This is understandably an anxious time for you and I hope you know more soon.

You have posted on the nurses thread but hopefully some others will jump on and chat with you as well.

I can't tell you exactly what will happen at the appointment but I would assume they will have a chat to you and ask you about your medical history and any symptoms first before examining you.

Do let them know of your past trauma so they can put you at ease and make you as comfortable as possible.

From the assessment they may be able to say what they think is going on or if they are unsure they may suggest arranging some more investigations to find out more.

Do remember there can be many reasons for lumps and bumps and alot of the time it won't be something as serious as a cancer.

Try and take things one step at a time and do ask questions to the doctor and share any concerns you have with them.

Do get back if you have more questions or you are welcome to call the nurses on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to talk over the phone instead. We're here weekdays 9-5.

I hope the appointment goes well and you know more soon.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thank you so much for replying Naomi, it means a lot to me.

I think my anxiety right now definitely lies within the not knowing.. I am a very black and white person in the sense that if I know the plan I can accept it and focus myself.

I know you obviously wouldn't know, but can you say the likelihood of them doing further tests if they needed to - for example a biopsy - tomorrow? Or do you know if it's more common for it to be arranged at a later date? Or completely random - sorry for the ramble lol.

    thank you again Naomi

    xx

  • Hello and thanks getting back to us again,

I can understand that it is easier to prepare yourself if you know what to expect but unfortunately I can't give you that information.

I am not sure whether they would biopsy it tomorrow but I am sure they will examine the area in more detail. You said that they were unable to perform an ultrasound so they will probably explain any further tests you may need to try and diagnose the lumps.

You may find it helpful because of your previous trauma to try to see if you can have a private word with the nurse running the clinic so she is made aware of your PTSD. You could ask if it was possible to have a nurse sitting in with you when you have your appointment if that is what you would like and there are enough staff on duty.

I do hope your appointment goes well. Don't be afraid to ask questions and do also let the gynaecologist aware of your past experience either through the nurse or by yourself.

You are of course more then welcome to ring and chat any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline.

We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Take Care,

    Catherine

  • Hey,

How are you doing?  I hope you don't mind my asking but how did your appointment go?  I too have found a lump but it is adjacent to the vagina .  I went for an ultrasound and I've now been referred to a specialist as she said she could see a cystic mass but that some of the mass had calcified - I e no idea even, if that is bad? I'm very anxious not least because I am a single mum of a 7 year old.

I've no idea how long it'll be before I hear about a specialist appointment or what they'll do when I get there... all the sonographer would say was I'm not a doctor, you'll have to ask your doctor.

The benefit of your insight might help me get some sleep at least.

    many thanks

  • Hello there

I am sorry you are too going through some tests at the moment and appreciate this must be a worry for you.

Whilst others may be going something that sounds similar to you the outcomes could be very different so you can't really compare.

Unfortunately no one on here can tell you much more than you already know and you do need to try and sit tight until you speak to the specialist.

I suggest you either try to speak to the hospital or your GP who may be able to give you a time frame in which you should have to wait to be seen.

I hope you know more soon but in the meantime try not to over think things until you have all the facts.

Most of the time lumps and cysts don't turn out to be anything as serious as a cancer and hopefully there will be a simple and non serious cause for your symptoms.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • I'm so sorry, I really didn't mean to ask the wrong question.  I'll consider myself chastised and wait patiently without asking anything further.  Sorry again.
