What to do if you find your cervical smear too painful?

Hi I'm 25 and I had my first cervical smear test attempt. I didn't know what to expect but the pain was so unbareable I couldn't continue to get it done. I was wondering how many attempts is recommeded until you go to extreme measurements of having local anaesthetic? I just feel so deflated and dissapointed that I couldn't get it done.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry that you found your first smear so painful. Although the majority of women find they can tolerate the procedure, it can still be uncomfortable and in some even painful.

Jo's Trust is a cervical cancer charity have lots of information about smears including how to make them less painfulHave a look at the link here

When you go for your next attempt then do mention to the person doing the smear about your first attempt. They may decide to use a smaller speculum which may make it more comfortable for you. I think that when we are worried or anxious our bodies can tense up making it a bit difficult for the nurse to insert the speculum in to the vagina so the cervix can be looked at and the sample taken.

Hopefully they will be able to reassure you. This in turn will make your body relax and hopefully make the smear test for you more comfortable.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I will take a look at the link you mentioned about Jo's Trust. It didn't help that I was feel anxious in the first place but no I know what to expect next time so hopefully it will be possible.

I checked with the person doing the smear test and it was the smaller speculum but its just one of thoses things women have to do isn't it.

They did give me a speculum to try myself but I was wondering how long shall I leave it until I try myself my appotintment was on 21/01?

Thanks again for your advice Catherine.
