Pre first chemo- advice please

My best friend has stage 3 bowel cancer, he had surgery just before Xmas which he aced but told today he begins what sounds like a gruelling 6 month regimen  of fortnightly infusions. Is there anything he can do now to help build up his immunity or do anything to help get himself in the best position to meet this chemo? He doesn't drink or smoke, he's daily active and eats pretty sensibly. Are there any extra nutrients/supplements that would help or am I grasping at straws? Many tia.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your friend

I am sure the consultant and nurses will give him plenty of advice on managing the chemo, diet etc.

I had chemo to but for a different cancer so not able to help much.

I would say though drink plenty of water to flush the drugs through

Its nice he has a caring friend as support is so important!

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your friend needing chemo but it is good to hear they are doing well after surgery.

When it comes to preparing for chemotherapy it sounds like your friend is already on the right track with eating sensible ( a balanced and healthy diet) avoiding alcohol and not smoking. If they also carry out some regular light exercise as well this also can be useful. We have some information about preparing for treatment physically here and eating here.

As long as patients are eating healthily they should get all the nutrients they need from their food without the need for supplements. Patients undergoing cancer treatments need to check with their own doctor if they are taking or wish to take additional supplements as some may interfere with the treatment. There is more information at this link.

I wish your friend all the best moving forward but do get back if you have more questions.

    Take care

    Naomi
