Hysteroscopy - post menopausal bleeding

Hi

I've been on HRT for about 10 months. I had some heavyish bleeding 4 months in and spoke to my doctor who said it should settle down and it wasn't unusual. It did eventually though I think I had spotting on and off.  Around a month ago the bleeding started again and so I was referred for an ultrasound which showed a thickening of my womb lining. The nurse said she couldn't see anything to suggest cancer but they have to rule it out so I'm being sent for a hysteroscopy. Unfortunately because I've had covid I have to wait another two weeks which seems like a lifetime and I'm getting very anxious.  Wondering if anyone has had this. I hear its not uncommon for hrt to cause bleeding. I've also had lots of hormonal type headaches.  Any words of advice would be appreciated x

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear about the bleeding you are experiencing and appreciate this must be an anxious time for you.

The waiting for tests can be an unsettling time and having to wait even longer because of covid must be agonising for you.

As you say HRT can cause bleeding including a thickened uterine lining so this may be the cause of these symptoms you are having.

Try not to over think things for now if you can and see what the hysterectomy results show before jumping to conclusions.

Unfortunately no one else can tell you anymore until more tests have been carried out.

Hold your nerve for now and hopefully you will know much more soon.

Do get back if you have more questions or you are welcome to give the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thank you Naomi.  Yes an agonising time

  • i have been on HRT for years and had bleeding off and on throughout. US scan in 2020 was fine. just had another one and got lining of 8.1mm. As anything over 3/4mm  at this stage (i am 58) is considered a risk and is investigated.

i got hysteroscopy on 31 jan to check all is ok.

i try not to worry until there is something to worry about to be honest (not easy!)

    fingers crossed we both ok.
