Rituximab

My mum is 80 years old she has been diagnosed with l non hogkins lymphoma she is absolutely fine in herself her platelets have been up and down for years she has now been told she can have rituximab treatment but we are concerned about whether it's worth the side effects against her being absolutely fine in herself now knowing there will more than likely be deterioration in the future (timescale unknown)

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is difficult to give an opinion on this without knowing much about your mum's situation. I would discuss this with your mum to see what she feels about this. The doctors will have weighed up her general health and how she would cope with retuximab before they made their decision. If you ask your mum's permission you could also discuss your concerns with her doctors.

If your mum is keen to have retuximab she could always start the treatment and then if she does have side effects then she could stop taking it. We do have some information on our website about retuximab which you can see here

All potential side effects are listed but not everyone experiences them. Before each course of rituximab your mum will have a blood test and a general assessment as to how she is getting on with the treatment so she will be continually monitored.

If you or your mum would like to ring and speak to one of the nurses on the helpline then you are very welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
