abnormal smear

I had a low grade smear result a year a go ,I have just been tested again and it's changed to medium grade i also have hpv ,also had 2 calposcopys and both normal, I have low immune system so it hasn't got rid of the abnormalities over the last year ,as I believe this is what a healthy immune system does ,the hospital have decided after discussing my case at a meeting yesterday that my smear is definitely correct and it's medium grade and they want me to go for treatment because of age and obvious low immune system ,I also had a biopsy in 1993.im confused if at two recent calposcopys that said are normal, how can they do a biopsy if there's nothing there ,also they said my cervix is tiny ,and I don't understand why that makes a difference as wouldn't that mean less chance of cancer, they dont put your mind at rest it's really horrible, this ruined my Xmas and new year ,the patient really should be informed more so now have to wait another two weeks of stress ,my mental health is already suffering because of illness now this ,its effecting me eating and sleeping

they even mentioned hysterectomy a year a go ,i really don't think I would survive a general anaesthetic as my lungs are worsening with emphysema ,I'm being negative and can't see why i would put myself through a hysterectomy when daily living is hell anyway with pain ,unrelated to this subject ,i would be so grateful if my mind was eased a little thankyou for your time

  • Hi Newso and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear you've been having a worrying time recently.

Smear tests pick up cell changes which can then be monitored and treated. Low grade changes are often monitored.  You said that you now have medium grade changes, this may be CIN2 or CIN3 changes.  CIN2 can be monitored or treated, and CIN3 is usually treated.  You can read more about this here.

You mentioned that you have had two recent colposcopies.  It sounds like you are going for another colposcopy appointment, which will take a closer look at your cervix, but this is also where treatment can be carried out.  You will be able to ask the colposcopist about what is going to happen.  They may carry out a liquid test, which shows up the areas of cell changes, or take a biopsy.  They may also carry out any treatment that is needed at this time. You can read more about the appointment here.

I'm not sure what they meant when they said your cervix was tiny, but you could also ask about this at your appointment.

Some people find that that when they are waiting for tests or results, it can be helpful to keep busy.  There are some ideas here that can help with controlling those thoughts that keep us awake at night, which you may find useful.
