Skin biopsy tomorrow, how do they give the results?

Hello,

I am having a skin lesion removed tomorrow to be sent for biopsy. Its a 6mm mark on my foot, which the consultant couldnt diagnose by looking at. I am terrified its going to be cancer, because if it is it will probably be an aggressive type (I am Indian and therefore more likely to have the same type of cancer than killed Bob Marley). The skin lesion has been there for years too.

After the results come back, how will I be informed? Is it a face to face appt regardless of whether its benign or malignant?

Really scared, I havent slept properly for the past month since my initial appt and I know I wont sleep much till I have the answer.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is difficult to say how you will be given the results and how long they will take  as there are variations up and down the country depending on a pathologists work load.

Do ask the consultant how long they think it will be before you get the results back and how you will receive them. They are in the best position to answer your questions as they know how their hospital works.

Try not to think too far ahead, as you said the surgeon was not sure what it could be, so until you get the results no one is going to be able to tell you any more.

Some people say that whilst they are waiting for results it helps to keep busy and your mind distracted so you may find it helpful to do so.

if you feel that it would be helpful to ring and chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to do so. We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
