Metastatic papillary thyroid cancer

Hi my mum has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer that has metastasised to her, lung, rib, pelvis and brain. (8 Tumours in her brain) she had thyroid cancer 7 years ago and had a thyroidectomy. Thought was all clear but alas not.

she starts whole brain radiotherapy next week, I try not to read too much on the internet but do we make the most of a short future or hope for a year or more?

shes 77 but a fighter, thanks for listening

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation, this news must have come as a shock and this must be an difficult time for you all.

Metastatic thyroid cancer is rare and even more so if it spreads to the brain. It seems like the doctors are planning whole brain radiotherapy in the hope that it will give her some more time but how long this will extend her life is difficult to know.

Everyone is different and how patients respond to treatment can also vary, it is only usually the doctors and nurses directly involved in a patients care who are in the better position to give a time frame, so do ask them when you can.

It is always best to make the most of every day as none of us know what is around the corner. As you say it is possible to read around survival rates on the internet but it is not possible to know where your mum may fit within these. Generally speaking a patients prognosis who has brain mets is usually poor however treatment often does give more time to them and the family.

I hope this helps a little but do get back in touch if you have more questions, alternatively give the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

Wishing you and the rest of your family all the very best

    Take care

    Naomi
