Enlarged Ovary

Hi my GP referred me for a scan and the result state that one ovary is 3.5 cm3 and is normal, however the other is 8.5cm3 and appears normal with no sign of a cyst. My gp has arranged for a face to face consultation ASAP to discuss...should I be concerned? There seems a big difference in size between the 2 ovaries.

I have had both fibroids and endo for which I had a partial hysterectomy a few years ago. I have had recent vaginally bleeding (only slight), and my periods started when I was 9 and was incredibly heavy..does this put me at an increased risk of something sinister?

Thanks

  • Hi Sj and thanks for posting,  It sounds like a worrying time for you.

There can be several causes for ovaries that are different sizes, including cysts, and benign tumours.

Unfortunately we cannot tell you what may be causing yours. You said you are seeing your GP so they will be able to explain more about what your results mean.

You ask if your history would increase your risk of something sinister.  Our individual risk can be increased by many things, such as age, body weight, and whether or not we smoke.

We have more information about risk here which although meant for health professionals does explain it well.  This mentions the number of times you have ovulated, whether you have had children and if you have had a hysterectomy.

But having a risk factor, or even having many, does not mean that you will get the disease. And some people who get the disease may not have any known risk factors.

I hope this is useful and that you get your results soon.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
