Melanoma WLE wait …

Hi there - looking for some advise,

After a biopsy last year in October I was diagnose with Melanoma in Situ on the inner thigh of my right leg beside my knee. They advised that during the biopsy unfortunately the pathologists had misplaced the deeper layer of the biopsy which would determine how much further tissue would need removed if required so they were going to remove double what they normally would as a belts and braces procedure during WLE but reassured me that the cells which they did have were 100% melanoma in situ.

This was all quite reassuring and was just waiting on my WLE - I then found out I was pregnant and called the consultant who then advised me it would be best to wait for the WLE in my second trimester so I am booked in on 23rd Jan for this. The reason I am posting is over the past week the old scar site from initial biopsy has become very very itchy again , quite red and the small freckle which used to be beside the one biopsied is now raised and changing ? I am slightly worried due to the WLE being put back and if it was the right thing to do ? Could the cells be growing more now they haven't done the WLE to check all of them are competlely away ?

  • Hello Sparkles91 and thanks for posting,

I am not sure why your scar has become red and itchy again or why this freckle has changed.  Skin changes can occur in pregnancy, so this could be an explanation but I can't say for sure that it is.  I think to get some peace of mind you should try and speak to the hospital dermatologist and get their input.

I suppose if there were any melanoma cells left behind after an initial excisional biopsy, then it would be possible for them to grow, but this might have nothing to do with these recent skin changes so keep an open mind. Try and talk to the dermatologist,  as they know your details they are in the best position to reassure you (you can usually leave a message with their secretary via the switchboard).

If you want to talk anything over please give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes.
