Birthmark or more?

I've had this birth mark for what feels like as long as I've been alive, but over the years it has continued to change, getting bigger or smaller, lighter or darker. I just wondered if it's possible to have a melanoma for years and not know. Or am I worrying over nothing.

Wish I could add a photo as I'm not very good at explaining

  • Hi EJB2019 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear that you are worrying about your birthmark.

Most birthmarks do not need treatment but some do, so it is important to get it checked if you are worried about it.  You can make an appointment with your GP for them to assess you.  They will use a checklist to decide if the birthmark needs investigating further.

Most birthmarks carry no risk of developing into cancer. But a very rare type, called a giant congenital melanocytic naevus, can develop into a melanoma if it is larger than 20cm.  We have more information here about risks and causes of melanoma that you might like to look at.

We are unable to look at images and cannot make a diagnosis, and we would always say to see your GP so you are able to get properly checked out.

I hope this is helpful, but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
