Worried- found a large polyp in sigmoid of bowel

Has anyone experienced having a large polyp removed please.
Had my colonoscopy  on 19th December and they removed 3 small ones but there is a large one of 25mm with a stalk, a subpendiculated one in the sigmoid area of bowel. Wondered if these can be cancerous? I have to have it injected to lift it away from bowel which is worrying me too.
I came away asking no questions now I have a million :-( must have been there ages.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

You have posted on the ask the nurses section of cancer chat but anyone is welcome to post here so hopefully others will pop on and share their stories with you as well.

I am sorry to hear about you having some polyps and now needing to have the larger polyp removed and appreciate your concerns.

Try not to over think things if you can, polyps are very common and in most cases don't do anything. There are a type of polyp called adenomas that if left can after many years turn into cancer but this doesn't always happen.

By removing the polyp this reduces the risk of cancer developing so hopefully everything will be okay for you. I am sure if the doctors involved in your care were suspicious about this being cancer they would have told you.

Do ask the doctor any questions you have the next time you see them but in the meantime feel free to get back to us. We also have our helpline on 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays ( excluding bank holidays) 9-5.

    All the best to you

    Naomi

  • Hi! I went through this in November, a 3cm polyp was found but couldnt be removed so had to go see a specialist. He injected under it and removed it. Because it's just in the sigmoid, it's pretty easy, and completely painless. I was eating a Big Mac an hour later!! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask

  • I've had my colonoscopy yesterday and they removed 25mm sigmoid polyp. It was painless and i wasn't even sadated. Now I have to wait for biopsy results. I'm worried sick. Did you get your biopsy results yet guys ?

  • Hello and thank you for posting in Ask the Nurses,

Waiting for the results of tests and investigations can be worrying so I hope you know them soon.

Please get back to us if you need any information or support and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • I had my results the end of November, mine unfortunately did turn out to be cancer. I had my bowel resection on the 6th jan. I'm just waiting to find out if I have to have chemo now. Most polyps don't end up being anything sinister. And once they're out it's over and done with. The waiting is the worst thing in the world. I found it so hard. I'm only 37 and a single mum, and all the most terrifying and worst case scenarios ran through my head. The best thing to do is keep busy, binge watch something good on tv, enjoy your hobbies, see friends and family. Let us know how you get on!
