Needle biopsy - what to expect?

Hi everyone,

I'm due to have a needle biopsy in a week after a lump was found during an examination by a doctor. At the moment I have a severe inflammatory infection of the breast, non lactactional. Had an ultrasound which confirmed this and generally, positive, but the lump bothered the doctor which is why I'm back next week once infection has cleared.
Would like to know whether will be able to drive after needle biopsy and if any recovery is needed? I'm planning on going on my own and driving there and back.

Thanks!!

  • Hi Sheena,

I hope you are ok and not worrying too much about the biopsy.

You should be absolutely fine to go on your own and drive there and back. Likely have a bit of bruising (quite a lot in my case but I've always bruised like a peach!!).

Wishing you all the best x

  • Thank you! Good to hear it's not too arduous and can go alone. Would hate to drive there and struggle to get back.
And I'm feeling okay thank you. I had an ultrasound today and was kinda reassuring but need to see what this lump is about. Not feeling too panicked at this stage.

  • Hi Sheena84 and thanks for posting,

There is some information on the NHS website about biopsies and what to expect.

In most cases they will be carried out under local anaesthetic and you should be able to drive yourself home afterwards.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel

  • Thank you so much - this is really useful and will be calling that line when I can. Typically moving house day after so could do without any severe pain / bruising etc!

  • Hi,

I have had 3 different biopsies over the last 3 months before eventually being diagnosed.  Contrary to what nurse Rachel said they were all carried out under local anaesthetic.  I was allowed to drive after 2 of them but not the vacuum assisted biopsy where they gave a slightly stronger anaesthetic and there is more risk of bleeding.  Do you know what kind of biopsy you are having?
I was told not to lift anything for 24 hours (so you may have to direct rather than lift for the house move) but recovery was fine ...just a bit of bruising which I imagine was less uncomfortable than your infection. I had to keep my dressing dry for a couple of days.

I hope your lump is clear!

  • I'm so sorry to hear you were diagnosed - how is your treatment going? They said it would be a needle biopsy - at the time my head went to mush and I completely forgot to ask all my questions! At moment infection is really trying hard to stick around so hoping that it clears in time for biopsy next week so I can deal with whatever it is!

  • Do you have a number for a breast nurse you can call?  In my experience they have been amazing and can probably clarify everything.  They know it is overwhelming to take in at the beginning.

my treatment has not begun yet. I have surgery in a couple of weeks.  I am just trying to enjoy the Christmas break before I actually start to feel unwell (mine was picked up from mammogram- nothing to feel and no symptoms).

good luck and hope your infection clears soon

  • Hi Sheena 84 and thanks for your reply.

I have realised that there is a mistake in my original response. It should have read local anesthetic will be used and not general anaesthetic.  I am sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

In case anyone else reads it in the future, I am going to edit this response now and correct what was said.

There is more information on breast biopsies on the Breast Cancer Now website which you may like to look at.

I hope this clarifies things for you.
