Diagnosis query - prostate cancer

Hi,

My Dad has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. We're currently waiting on biopsy and bone scan.

He has been told from the MRI that it's not spread to the lymph nodes and it looks positive.
My question is around the bone scan, as I have read that the MRI would show if the cancer has spread to the bones as well. Is there a reason they look for you to have a bone scan as well as the MRI?
thanks.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

It is difficult for me to give a definite answer to this as we are not part of your dads treatment team. But it depends if your dad had a full body MRI as the bone scan would look at the whole skeleton.  Also the two scans do look at bones in a slightly different way, so doing both would ensure a full picture of your dads situation. This then helps them piece together all the information before coming up with his treatment plan. I've placed here a link to the tests people usually have for prostate cancer.
