Dark patches under toenails

I have dark, round patches under both my big toenails. They're round (but with no clear edges), and start from the outer edge of the nail and expand inwards towards the middle of the nail.

They developed in the last couple of weeks and both at the same time - am I right in thinking that since they both came at once this is most likely from my shoes or from doing other sport, rather than any form of skin cancer?

  • Hi TillyDoe and thanks for posting,

It does sound as though these marks could be from pressure or a trauma to the nail, especially as they have both appeared at the same time and look similar.  It is very unlikely to be skin cancer.

There is some information here about problems with nails and what can cause them.

If you are worried about the marks you could ask your GP to have a look at them.  They will be able to assess you.

    I hope this is useful.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel

  • Hi Tillydoe

I have the same on my fingernails and toe nails in my case it's due to psoriasis. As Rachel the nurse said it could be trauma. I would let your GP have a look just in case it is psoriasis.
