Lymph node biopsy

Can anyone provide some light

I'm 28 and had a ct scan of my kidneys due to pain and my history of kidney stones.

There was an incidental finding of abnormal mesenteric lymph nodes.  The doctors want to rule out possible lymphoma by carrying out a biopsy.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and should I worry as I do not have any symptoms of lymphoma other than feeling tired which I thought was due to low vitamin d levels.

Also usually how long is the wait to have a biopsy?

Many thanks

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you are having and appreciate that undergoing further tests must be a worry for you.

Whilst others may post their stories here remember everyone is different and the cause of symptoms or findings such as swollen lymph nodes will vary.

Commonly swollen lymph nodes are the result of infection either viral or bacterial and there is no exception to this in the stomach region. Occasionally mesenteric lymph nodes are the result of a cancer but this is rare.

It sounds like the doctors are being thorough in taking a biopsy just to rule out something more serious but the time frame in which this will be done will depend on the urgency and individual hospitals resources. If you call the hospital they may be able to give you a time frame. Once you have had the biopsy it usually takes a couple of weeks for the results.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi

Thank you for your reply.  Can the viral or bacterial infection cause enlargement of both mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymph nodes?

  • Hello Ana1994 and thanks for getting back in touch.

As my colleague Naomi said the most common cause of enlarged lymph nodes is an infection.  This can cause both mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymph nodes to be enlarged.

    I hope this is helpful.
