High inflammatory levels and no answers

I have been suffering from stomach pain for the last 20 years to varying degrees and this was put down to IBS as colonoscopies at the time we're coming back clear.

Recently I became very ill, doubled over with pain, joint pain, being sick, fever, headache and my doctor's sent me for some blood and stool tests. The Serum C reactive protein levels in my blood tests came back at  40 mg/L [normal range 0.0 - 4.0] and the calprotectin in the fecal samples came back at 1204 (normal range 100) so this shows high levels of inflammation in my body.

I've also lost 10lbs in the last 3 weeks.

I feel pretty terrible on a daily basis and was initially told they were going to send me for more camera work but they've now decided to wait a month. I guess I'm just freaking out a bit and worried if it is something bad like bowel cancer (or even Crohn's) that it will only get worse over that time.

My anxiety is through the roof

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the concern you have about the results you have had. While I know this must be a worrying time it still does not mean you necessarily have cancer. It also seems, from what you have told us,  that you are being followed up and may have more tests if they are needed. So that must be some reassurance.

I do hope your symptoms get better and that you have some support. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
