Pain after axillary lymph node removal biopsy

Hi! So on the 13th of this month I had an axillary lymph node biopsy- currently in the process of being diagnosed with lymphoma:(

it's been a week now and I'm having stabbing pain in my breast and shooting down my arm- I was prescribed codeine, but it's not working!

i know I'm probably over doing it but this can't really be helped because my partner is self employed and we currently have a 5 month old baby. I really don't know what to do anymore but I'm struggling!

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Trying to manage pain and a 5 month old baby must be tough.

If you are constantly picking up your baby then it does make it hard for the area to rest and heal but hopefully as time goes on the pain should definitely ease. I am not sure whether over the next couple of days you could try and rest it a bit more to give the area time to heal.

I would let the team know at the hospital that you are continuing to get pain to see what they advise or your GP if you are unable to get through to any one at the hospital. Do check for any redness or infection as well, particularly if you are breastfeeding or weaning. It may be worth checking your temperature.

The charity Lymphoma Action have some information about biopsies and what to expect which you can see here

You could also speak to your local pharmacist and see what they suggest about taking some painkillers in between the codeine such as paracetamol. There are various gels that you may find helpful to rub on the area.

I hope that some of these suggestions help.

You are more then welcome to ring our helpline and speak to one of the helpline nurses. We are here Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the very best,

    Catherine
