Hi Looking for some help with my dads almost daily sickness.

He has secondary cancer in spine its not got any worse in past year but got radiotherapy treatment a few month back but since then is sick almost daily. Hes on morphine daily as has back pain. Nurses have tried mixing/ changing his tablets but nothing seems to be helping. Has anyone any suggestions.

  • Hello and thank you for posting. I am so sorry your dad is having these problems.

It is difficult to give very accurate advice as we aren't part of his care team but I wonder if your dad has had his symptoms and medicines reviewed by a palliative care or Macmillan team. They are experts in symptom management and medications for people in a similar position as your dad.

It might be that your dad needs a break from tablets while they look at the cause or try and control this sickness. Painkillers can be given other ways like patches or through a little pump, but either way this specialist team will try and get him a better quality of life than he has currently.

If you don't think this team are involved do give your dads GP, hospital doctor or specialist nurse (CNS) a call and ask for a referral.

Take care Billy and I hope your dad feels more comfortable soon. Do remember to also look after yourself, I've posted here some information which may be useful.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah
