Just found out I am pregnant but need radioactive iodine ?

Hi all,

I am 11 days post op. Had a thyroidectomy and neck dissection following my diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer. I was advised that after my surgery I will need radioactive iodine treatment not sure when exactly but potentially within 2 months.

I have just found out I'm pregnant after trying for so many months so I am so shocked yet so scared because I don't know where I stand. Radioactive iodine is a NO NO during pregnancy in fact pregnancy should be avoided for 6-12 months after. So have no idea what happens as I haven't started my treatment

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. If you haven't already done so then do get in touch with your medical team and let them know about your pregnancy.

I am sure that they will be able to advise you on your next steps. There is no point trying to guess what they are going to say. I am sure that they will want what is best for you and the baby.

Try not to think too far ahead until you have had a chance to talk it through with your doctors.

If you would like to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here from monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the very best,

    Catherine

  • I am not a nurse or an expert in any way, so take this with a certain pinch of salt, but from my own experience, well, my surgeon told me the radio-iodine treatment should probably be done within the year. So again, I'm no expert, but it may be possible to wait until after your pregnancy.

Of course I don't know your circumstances but for many (most?) people with papillary thyroid cancer, radio-iodine treatment is to reduce the risk of reccurrence. So there may not be urgency. Especially if you are at low-to-medium risk and it's largely precautionary.
