Always had one large tonsil is this normal?

I've always had a large right tonsil since I can remember - it's always big. I used to get tonsillitis all the time as a child and even saw a specialist who said I would grow out of it. For years I would catch it but now I rarely do!

With Covid tests and things I've been paying more attention to my tonsils (due to swabbing) my right tonsil is still big, but my smaller one I think has changed(hard because we don't look at them much ha) I think it's got another lump near it/attached or maybe it's just bigger. I do currently have more of a severe cough now (I've had a bit of a one for a while after having RSV).

I got curious about one larger and one small and as you can image Googled and couldn't find much info on having a large tonsil my whole life (it never goes down), but loads of places popped up with the more severe things. Is it normal to have a big tonsil your whole life and a tiny one? I'm going to keep monitoring the small one ATM too.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I do think it is okay to have tonsils that are not the same size, no one is perfect.   However, if you are concerned about them do mention it to your GP.

Please remember that googling health problems to see what is the matter is not always the the best thing to to do, to find out what is the matter discuss it with your GP.

    Take care,

    Caroline
