Lump in neck

Hi,

looking for some advice, I am 24. But first found a lump in my neck when I was 22 - I went to a doctor then and they told me it was a swollen lymph node and did bloods which were all normal. I then changed doctors when I was 23 and they told me something different saying it was swollen salivary glands. My general health is pretty good, although I have IBS And on medication for anxiety. I have been to the doctor a lot about extreme tiredness where im nearly falling asleep at work at my desk and they keep saying it will be my anxiety. But I am still really concerned about the lump in my neck - it's about the size of a grape and hasn't changed size at all. Only have it on one side as well.. just looking for some advice as I feel as though I have been brushed off by the doctors and don't know how to go forward as I really want some peace of mind.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Lymph nodes can be raised for various reasons, such as a local skin infection, or a blocked or inflamed lymph gland (lymph node). Sometimes lymph nodes come up in response to a recent bacterial or viral infection elsewhere in the body even when a person feels well. It can take several months for them to go down and sometimes they may never go back to their original size, and this might be now part of your normal anatomy.

GP's have guiedelines when patients present with lumps and it does sound reassuring that your lump has not changed in size and all your blood tests were normal. We of course can't diagnose anyone on the forum. It is only your doctor with their medical nknoweledge who can assess you and work out whether you need further tests.

Health anxiety however can be exhausting. I am not sure what medication you are having for this but  wonder whether this is having an affect on how tired you are feeling.

It may be worth chatting to your GP about it all. I am not sure whether you have come across the NHS website called 'Every Mind Matters' but you may find it helpful to look at the various tips. Have a look here

I also wonder whether you have considered any talking or counselling therapy. You may find it helpful to look at the information on this link here

I do hope that you feel better soon and that you have a lovely Christmas and new Year.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
