Can I still have a Neuroendocrine tumour

I finally got my blood tests I had for a Neurendorcrine Tumour back after chasing them around for over 1 month, and they are all ok.I had a Octrotide scan which showed a lesion in my small bowel mesentry and I was refered to a hospital in London which is over 3 hours away from me. Long story short. If I had been given my blood results befor going to London and not having to chase them around, I could have chatted to my consultant at my local hospital and maybe not had to go to london.

My question is : How can I have a NET with normal blood results? And why did I have to do lots and lots of phoning around just to get my blood test results that were actually already at the hospital at least 6 weeks befor my london appointment. There also not sent to my G.P.

Any answers would be grateful.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Although blood tests can help to diagnose some types of neuroendocrine tumours other types may not cause any abnormalities in the blood. You can read more about this here.

I'm afraid I can't explain why it took so long to get your blood results. This is something that the hospital needs to explain to you. If you have any difficulty with getting hold of someone you  might want to contact the hospital's  Patient Advice and Liaison Service ( PALS)  to discuss your concerns.

We have some information on small bowel neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) on our website at this link.

There is a support organisation called Neuroendocrine Cancer UK ( NETs) who support people affected by neuroendocrine tumours. Their contact details are here.

I hope this has been of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank You Celene for answeing my post. I will def read the links.

I did ask why they have not done a biopsy and was told because of the location it is not possible to do one as they would have to go thro the bowel. I did have lots of questions but I was so over welmed I forgot to even get my list of questions out.

    Thank you so much.
