CT vs MRI

I have been referred by my gastroenterologist for a chest/abdomen/pelvis CT with contrast. I had the same scan 5 years ago which was clear. I am very concerned about radiation levels. (I have had several other CTs for dental reasons).  I wish I had asked if an MRI could be an alternative option and wonder if i should pursue this.  Would an MRI give the same information?  I would be grateful for any information.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am afraid this is a question that you will have to ask your gastroenterologist.

Often both an MRI and a CT scan with contrast are requested to get the maximum amount of information about a patient. I am not sure what your situation is but usually tests are organised for a reason. Doctors have got to weigh up the benefits of getting as much information as possible to be able to get the right diagnosis against a small radiation exposure.

A CT scan is usally the first scan that is done and then if they need more information then they request an MRI.

I can understand your concern if you have had other CT scans before but do talk it over with your doctor who will be able to advise you further.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Catherine
