Fit test

I have just received a fit test result of 129 ug/g , I have been suffering from bowel problems such as having to go to the toilet to poop straight after a meal, I have had this problem over a number of years, it might be IBS, can anyone reassure me on my result as I am quite worried.

  • Hi

Is your GP going to send you for a colonoscopy to find out what is going on?

Any tiny amount of blood would be picked up with this test so if you suffer from piles or maybe a tear if sometimes you find it hard to go will give a high result.

If you have had this problem years I wouldn't think the worst but it needs investigating so it can be treated.

  • I do suffer from piles and I am awaiting my GP to contact me

  • I am now 70 years old and I have been doing the bowel testing kits that they send you every two years, all came back negative so not sure why the fit test is different

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I see that you have been given some good advice from Ineedabreak.

I'm sorry that your recent  FIT test came back positive.

I'm afraid we aren't going to be able to say if there is anything the matter, as we cannot diagnose anyone. But having a positive test does not definitely mean you have cancer. There can be many reasons for blood in the stools and a range of bowel conditions that can cause the bleeding but something more serious such as cancer does need to be ruled out.

A colonoscopy (a camera to examine the bowel) is usually the next test following a positive test to be able to take a look at the bowel more closely to identify any abnormal areas that may be responsible for the bleeding.

I hope you know more soon and that everything turns out to be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • I had an abnormal FIT test and was referred for a colonoscopy. I think it's likely this would be the next step for you to determine the cause of bleeding.
